“You Deserve To Fail”
No not you personally, I’m talking about several of the shops I visited yesterday in Southport.
I was with Karen shopping for a birthday present for my brother and I couldn’t believe how 99% of the stores I went into were throwing away sales and sales opportunities.
My brother likes a certain type of aftershave and let me tell you it isn’t cheap… at £90 for a small bottle it definitely isn’t cheap! However it’s not something he would buy for himself because of the cost and as it’s his birthday I was going to treat him.
We went into several shops to ask for the aftershave and the responses we had were amazing!
In one shop the assistants were sat on the floor doing a stock take of the lower shelves…that wasn’t the problem…when I asked if they had the aftershave the response was:
”If it’s not on the shelf then we haven’t got it”
They didn’t get up, ask what it was for, would an alternative do or could they show me some others?
In fact I don’t think they looked up fully!
In other shops I received polite responses confirming that they didn’t stock it but still no questions to see if I could be sold another.
In fact, in one shop the assistant gave me directions to a store that did stock it! Great for me, good service but, and it’s a big BUT, they should have asked me more questions and attempted to sell me an alternative.
I have no idea if the manager or owner of these stores where on the shop floor but I bet they’ll be the first to moan about the state of the economy, agree with all the media hype about falling sales when what they need to do is stop the poor sales and service in their own store first!
Many sales people have never had to sell in their life because times have been so good for so long. With the emergence of the new economy and consumers being more discerning about what and where they spend their money poor sales people, and business owners, who aren’t stepping up their sales and marketing are being exposed and suffering for it.
Don’t let this be you.
Now is the time to step up your marketing so your customers and prospects know that YOU are the person they should be doing business with whether you’re selling a simple ebook, a high priced course or…aftershave.
In this case the weak link in the chain were the shop assistants… when running a web business the weak link could be your follow up process, your offers, not having an up sell in place or not being consistent in your marketing.
ALWAYS go over your business looking for the weak links and fix them. You’ll be amazed at what you will find.
Best wishes
Neil
