The Number One Secret To Being Successful
For more than a decade, our collective direct response online and offline marketing experience, has taught us one thing about being successful… that there isn’t any real secret to online success.
What is success? Is it…
- working for yourself on your terms?
- a large house in the country?
- having the security of a second income knowing that you can always cover your bills?
- three foreign holidays a year?
- a pension top up?
- simply having an online presence?
- learning new skills and having wins along the way? (Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks!)
You see these are just a few of a 101+ reasons that I heard over the years as to how people measure success. Some measure it with wealth, others… health and also happiness.
So when someone reports to know that #1 Secret For Online Success, how can they since success means so many different things to many people. Cliché I know, but for me success is a journey and not a destination.
Sure, I have all the material desires of the larger house in the country etc… but it’s more than that it’s about living life on my terms, choosing to work when I want, where I want that is also critical to my success equation.
If you want to be successful at anything all you can really do is prepare yourself to be successful.
Just as a farmer must prepare the land, by ploughing the fields, sowing the seeds, watering and nourishing the seedlings, fending off pests, cutting out the bad plants, protecting the shoots from cold snaps in order to give himself the best chance of a bumper harvest… so should you prepare yourself.
If you truly want a successful online business, that stands the test of time… you must do a little thing every day to grow your business.
So how do small acorns grow to be large might oaks?
It’s a simple matter of being organised and systematic in your approach.
A person who does business in an organised fashion, having a time and place for everything, doing their tasks promptly, will accomplish twice as much and with half the trouble of a person who is haphazard in approach and careless.
By having structure and a system in place, completing one thing at a time, always meeting deadlines (self imposed or other) with punctuality, you will discover a happy mix of leisure and family time, because you know that your work is done.
On the other hand, the person who only half does one thing before jumping to the next, and then only half finishes that, will have lots of unfinished strands and business at loose ends, worse still with so many unfinished items, they’ll never know when their day’s work is done… because it’s never done.
However, we must ensure that there is a happy balance here. We need to blend action with pragmatism… only bite off enough that you can chew in any one day. Larger projects require a project plan, with small tasks all contributing to the grand vision. Taking structured, direction based action is the #1 reason for success.
Taking some action every day, whether that’s a blog post, an auto responder, piece of content, short video, test on a sales page, affiliate email sent out, will all contribute… then with a dose of good fortune thrown in, you’ve got a greatly improved chance of success.
Now this may seem like an insanely simple concept, that may seem absurd, but this is what most people fail to grasp, and implement.
They buy the latest money making product on the market, they try it out for some time, and then when they don’t see immediate results, they move to the next money making product/program, and so on. See my later article on PAGE 14 where PT Barnum gives some fantastic wisdom on sticking to it!
I’m not saying that you need to stick to a program if it is no good, but I would say that you need to invest in a program for some time before you decide to abandon it.
Well, between Neil & I, we’ve probably spent close to six figures over the years on many different “money making” products on and off the Internet, and we have come to a conclusion that the best way to start seeing some results is by investing in step by step coaching & mentoring or master minding. Whether that’s in the flesh or as part of an online ecourse.
A good program will have many elements to it, some “classroom” learning where you get the facts and details, some “experiential” learning where you get to play around with your new knowledge and have a go, plus the ability to ask questions when you get stuck.
All of this should be laid out in a logical manner with some specific learning objectives and goals… so you can measure your success. Measurement is another key attribute of successful people… they measure results. The results provide detail and clues on what needs to be worked on next!
I know this all sounds so logical and simple doesn’t it? But the fact is, I see a lot of people (especially serial seminar attendees) who are trying to earn money on-line, but fail because their reason for becoming successful is not strong enough… and they never stick to anything long enough to give themselves a chance of success.
A core reason for doing anything in life is very important, and it is what differentiates a successful person from a procrastinator.
Procrastination seems to be one of the major factors which cause people not to reach their full potential… it’s a habit of the 95%ers!
However, if your reason to become successful is strong enough you will override this tendency to procrastinate, and take regular action to prepare for success and move your online business forward.
When you do this, you’ll join the 5% Club.

I get that it makes sense to just do one thing regularly yet I find it hard to do because I am not clear where my passion lies. So I am a seminar junky getting tempted by passion of the Secret Millionaires of property especially now the world economy is dependent on the “wisdom” of governments for its life support for the next 20 years or until it collapses due to the 700 trillion the banks created in derivatives – according to the former economist for the IMF who was speaking at the Achievers conference at Excel last week
Went to George Brown’s seminar yesterday,(should be there today but…..)
Very well written peice Neil.
And how true.
Thats why you are where you are and the reason I
chose you to build my web site.
Well done buddy,and thanks.
Keith.
Hello and thank you for above article, very informative and so true.
I think I have done most of things mentioned above,(the wrong things that is).
I certainly agree that procrastinating plays a big part in not moving forward.
Also an important stumbling block I found was “information overload”, we hear this so often but it still rings true.
A point I would add is (not mentioned by many) is
that people who have had a job for most of their
lives,(me) are stuck in the “job mentality” mindset, unlike someone from ‘self-employed’ or have run a business before. They need to learn to employ themselves. This is the biggest obstacle of
all, in my opinion.
Best regards
Thanks everyone for your comments and apologies for not getting back to you all sooner!
