Are you testing your email subject lines?

One of the great things about marketing online is your ability to test a great number of variables to improve your business…and test them quickly with almost immediate feedback.

One of the things I’m continually trying to do is to improve the open rate of the emails that go out throughout the week.

This week you may have received an email from me with the subject line as follows:

‘Do you ask these four questions?’

Or you may have received this subject line:

‘Do you make these four mistakes on your site?’

Both emails contained the same information with the only difference being the subject line.

Which do you think got the better open rate?

The results where:

1) Do you ask these four questions? 28.9%

2) Do you make these four mistakes on your site? 41.6%

Headline number two was the definite winner.

And the reason for this clear distinction?

I can of course only speculate without asking each person individually, however my own opinion is that most people are interested in the mistakes they ‘could’ be making rather than what they should be doing.
